Cressy Finally Wins One

Such has been Cressy’s form this season that even a first round victory at the Atlanta Open last week makes for headlines.

Cressy had gone into that tournament on the back of 14 defeats from 15 matches – a whoppingly poor record for a player who till very recently was on the verge of breaking into the top 30.

Which is why coming into his opener at Atlanta last week against Alex Michelsen, he was only a 4/5 favourite. In fact it was a surprise he even went in as a favourite, making his 6-3, 6-3 win a cause for celebration.

Against JJ Wolf in the second round, however, Cressy crashed out in straight sets.

Which is how he will start off his campaign at the Washington Open, having barely won anything but having at least recorded two wins from the last six matches – much better than the aforementioned record.

The question is if he can go past a player who has himself relied on clay to climb up the rankings ladder.

Shevchenko Returns to Hardcourt after Miami

More known for his performances on clay, Shevchenko showed a bit of turnaround with his showing in hardcourt competitions at the lower level earlier this year. This was when he followed up his first round exit at the Indian Wells Masters with a finals appearance at the Phoenix Challenger after starting out as a qualifier.

Shevchenko had earlier even won a title on this surface, clinching the Tenerife Challenger without dropping a set.

The problem for Shevchenko is he hasn’t played hardcourt competitions in a while. Even after his opening round exit at Wimbledon, he chose to take part on the clay courts of Bastad and Umag. Making matters worse for the Russian 22-year-old, he fell to two defeats in three matches in those couple of tournaments.

He might be facing an out of sorts Cressy here but on a surface he doesn’t have a lot of affinity for and after nearly four months.

Cressy v Shevchenko Prediction and Tip

Cressy might not be in best of form but should have enough fuel in his tank to overcome his opponent in this encounter.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Cressy to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
