Kevin Anderson v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

There have been three main draw matches played between these two players and Anderson has won every single time including once in 2021 in Indian Wells. This will be their first meeting since Anderson’s return from retirement.

Anderson Makes Quarterfinal in Newport

In what Anderson’s first instance of competitive tennis since his “unretirement”, he did well to make it to the quarterfinal of the Newport Open.

A former finalist on the hallowed grass at Wimbledon, Anderson registered straight-set wins over Gabriel Diallo and Gijs Brouwer to make it to the last eight stage of the competition there. It was Ugo Humbert who then got the better of the South African.

Anderson will now return to feature in a tournament he featured in every year between 2010 and 2017 and then again in 2021. Having made the quarterfinal on three previous occasions he had gone on to enter the final in 2017.

The last time Anderson was in Washington, however, he had been sent packing by Jenson Brooksby. Can he come back stronger in a tricky opening round encounter here?

Thompson Fell in Atlanta Opener

In an interesting coincidence, Thompson will be up against a player who is returning to competitive tennis after a substantial break. This follows his previous match, a first round encounter at the Atlanta Open against Kei Nishikori who had also returned earlier this year following an injury layoff for a while.

In that match in Atlanta, Thompson fought hard but fell in two tie-breakers to Nishikori.

That shouldn’t take away from the kind of form he was in on grass though, having reached the final of the Rosmalen Open and being a semifinalist at the Surbiton Challenger. He had also won at least a round apiece at each of the Queen’s competition, Mallorca, Wimbledon and Newport, reaching the quarterfinal of the last of those aforementioned tournaments.

Can he now shrug off that loss to Nishikori and live up to his 3/5 odds in this one?

Anderson v Thompson Prediction and Tip

While Anderson has resumed playing like he was never away, bookmakers are still a bit apprehensive of installing him as a favourite against a player ranked 63rd. This could be a good chance to make the buck by backing Anderson at 13/10 here.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Anderson to win: 13/10
