There have been two previous meetings between these two and both have won one apiece. Both matches came in 2021 and in hardcourt competitions including one in Washington itself where Nishikori had won in straight sets.

Harris Starts US Swing with Atlanta Showing

A former world number 31, Harris has fallen to outside the top 200 on the ATP charts having been out of action earlier this year because of fitness concerns.

His return to competitive tennis has been solid as the South African player slowly returns to his best form. Having resumed tennis in May, Harris had done nothing of note in his first few tournaments before he looked to have turned a corner in Mallorca.

Harris made it through to the main draw as a qualifier before winning three successive matches to reach the semifinal. And while that was followed by an opening exit at Wimbledon, he returned to hardcourt competitions with a second round appearance at the Atlanta Open last week.

He had started off as a qualifier there too before overcoming James Duckworth in the opener there. Ugo Humbert put an end to his chances there.

Nishikori Made Quarterfinal in Atlanta

Much like Harris, even Nishikori is only recently returning to competitive tennis and he played in his first ATP tournament in Atlanta last week. At that time, he was ranked 439th in the world but already he has been making strides.

He has climbed up 80 spots to make it close to breaking into the top 350 and that was thanks to the quarterfinal appearance at that tournament.

Nishikori overcame Jordan Thompson and Jung Shang in the first two rounds to enter the last eight stage before Taylor Fritz put an end to his campaign with a 6-4, 6-2 win over the former world number four.

A former winner at the Washington Open, Nishikori will hope to resume his journey here with a solid showing and with another player who has fallen out of the top 200 against him, he will consider himself to have a chance.

Harris v Nishikori Prediction and Tip

Nishikori has a better chance here, as he looks to go past his South African opponent. Three-setter in the offing that goes Nishikori’s way.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Nishikori to win: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
