Bencic Eager for Hard Swing

Belinda Bencic will be happy to get back on hard courts.

With hardly any participation in clay or grass events (just three tournaments in total), it is clear that the Swiss has focussed her 2023 tour on turfs where she is at her best.

The same is also supported by her superb start to the season. Bencic won the Adelaide 500 and WTA Abu Dhabi; between the two title runs, she also made it to round four in the Australian Open.

To her credit, Belinda was a runner-up in the Charleston Open (clay) as well – which has given her some good exposure. On the whole, she has 23 wins and just eight losses.

The 26-year-old is currently ranked #15 and is coming off a fourth-round loss in Wimbledon.

As a former top-five player, Bencic is more than equipped for a good run in the Citi Open this week.

Potapova, Looking to Shine

Anastasia Potapova has had quite a spell in 2023. The 22-year-old Russian bagged her second WTA title and, in the process, reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 21.

Now placed at the 26th spot, Potapova’s last stint was at SW19, where she fell in round three. Before that, she was a semifinalist in Birmingham.

The youngster’s win-loss tally stands at 27-14, with her notable performances coming in the Miami Open (quarterfinal), Stuttgart (semifinal), and the title run in Linz.

It is also worth noting that during this time, Anastasia also defeated a few big names like Caroline Garcia, Coco Gauff, Petra Martic, and Qinwen Zheng.

Potapova has come a long way over the last few seasons, becoming more and more confident with every match. She will start her campaign in Washington, DC, on a confident footing.

Bencic v Potapova Prediction and Tip

Bencic starts as the odds-on favourite owing to her superior experience and a stellar hard-court record in 2023. Having said that, Potapova has beaten Bencic once already and there’s no reason why can’t pull this off again.

Expect a cracking affair.
