Baez and Medjedovic have never faced off before this.

Baez on a Four-Match Losing Streak

Having climbed to 30th in the world earlier this season, Baez has lost a lot of his rhythm and currently seems to be in some sort of a freefall.

The Argentine, who began the year with a title win at Cordoba, has not been able to replicate that showing after that and what’s made it worse for him are his performances on his favourite clay court surface.

A quarterfinal at Rio and a semifinal in Santiago did follow that Cordoba triumph but since then, he has featured in 14 matches on clay and won a mere six.

This includes a rather poor run on European clay in the lead-up to the French Open which saw him just two matches at the Masters tournaments in Monte-Carlo, Rome and Madrid before his opening round crashing at Roland-Garros.

With the clay court season all but winding down, this will be his last chance to turn things around but up against him is a player who has taken a bit of confidence from his recent results.

Qualifier Medjedovic in a Good Rhythm

Medjedovic might not have made it past the first round at the Zug Challenger competition last week but he enters this tournament on the back of good form otherwise.

The Serb came through the qualifiers at the Gstaad in the week before that and then went on to defeat Zhizhen Zhang, Dominic Thiem and the in-form Yannick Hanfmann to make the semifinals there. It took Pedro Cachin to end his stay in that tournament.

Here, he has already overcome Lucas Miedler and Lukas Neumayer to help himself a place in the first round.

A winner of two Challenger tournaments on clay this season, Medjedovic has already risen from his season-low ranking of 261st to 146th. In fact, last year, he was ranked 671st in the world at one stage, indicating the kind of run he has made since.

Can he now shock the struggling Baez here?

Baez v Medjedovic Prediction and Tip

Baez will be a 4/5 favourite but those odds represent what kind of form he has been in. That being said, those are odds I would take for a Baez win on clay against a player who has only recently made the top 150 despite Baez’s poor form.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Baez to win: 4/5
