Emilio Gomez v Shang Juncheng Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings, both of which came on the Challenger circuit and Juncheng has won them both. They came in hardcourt and grass competitions, including one this year.

Gomez Has Struggled to Win Main Draw Matches

With a season & career-high ranking of 90th in the world, Gomez would have been hoping to climb up the ATP charts even further and get close to breaking into the top 50 at some stage. After all he had broken into the top 100 for the first time last season having been a ranked player since 2009.

Unfortunately for him, things haven’t quite gone to plan with Gomez having struggled to win main draw matches at the highest level.

In fact such has been his issues in recent times that victories on the Challenger circuit have been difficult to come by as well. This can be seen from the fact that since making the quarterfinal of the Gwangju Challenger in early May, Gomez has not won successive matches in a tournament.

He will now face an opponent who is ranked around his own ranking but is ascending up the charts as compared to his own self who has been dropping down the ladder. Can he turn things around here?

Juncheng Makes it Through the Qualifiers

More known for his performances on the Challenger circuit, Juncheng enters this tournament with a solid performance at the Atlanta Open under his belt.

Juncheng, who is currently ranked at his career-best of 149th in the world thanks to his showing at the Atlanta Open, defeated Gage Brymer and Thai-son Kwiatkowski in the qualifiers to make it to the main draw.

And here he has a golden chance to add to his small but burgeoning list of career wins as he takes to court. Having entered the Atlanta Open on the back of a first round win at the Australian Open earlier this year, he shocked Ben Shelton there to enter the second round.

Former Grand Slam runner-up Kei Nishikori ended his run there but now taking on a player who hasn’t done too well on the circuit, it could be a chance for Juncheng to make it his third career victory.

Gomez v Juncheng Prediction and Tip

No surprises for guessing who the favourite here but at 1/4, it looks like Juncheng is over-priced. Instead a games handicap market seems to be a better bet.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Games Handicap Shang -3.5: 4/6
