Sloane Stephens v Lauren Davis Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two players at the highest level and one on the ITF circuit and Davis leads 3-2. Their first four matches came between 2010 and 2015 while their most recent encounter was earlier this year in Hobart which Davis won in straight sets.

Stephens Returns after Early Wimbledon Ouster

Stephens has never paid a lot of attention to the grass swing and it turned out to be another season in which she featured in just one such tournament. That came at Wimbledon where she overcame Rebecca Peterson in the first round and then went down fighting to Donna Vekic.

And that was that. She now returns to the US Open swing with her first round match at this tournament in Washington.

What’s interesting to note is that the former US Open winner, Stephens, hasn’t done too well in hardcourt competitions this season. In fact for a player ranked 40th in the world, her inconsistencies are almost worrying.

Other than winning two successive matches in Austin and Merida, Stephens has a 0-5 win-loss record on hardcourt surfaces this year, making it a forgettable first half of the season on it. She has a chance to change that and improve upon her ranking too which has been fluctuating in and around the 40th-rank mark for a while now.

Davis Hoping to Win a Main Draw Match

Having begun the season ranked 87th in the world, Davis has done well to break into the top 50 yet again before coming into this tournament as a 54th-ranked player.

The former has been down to her performances in hardcourt tournaments at the start of the year which saw Davis win just her second career title in Hobart. She had entered that tournament as a qualifier and gone on to win seven matches in a row without dropping a set.

Davis hasn’t quite managed to reproduce that kind of form again but second round appearances at the Auckland Open, Australian Open and in Dubai have all helped.

During the grass swing, however, Davis fell to three successive opening round losses and she is on a four-match main draw losing streak at the moment. With wins over Alana Smith and Ashlyn Krueger in the qualifiers, Davis has given herself a chance to break that losing record but will face a challenging match first up.

Stephens v Davis Prediction and Tip

No doubting the favourite is Stephens with bookmakers offering 4/6 for her victory but Davis is no pushover and she has shown in the past what she is capable of in the past. Will be an intriguing battle we feel.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Davis to win a set: 4/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Games Handicap Davis +2.5: 5/6
