Dimitrov Returning from Wimbledon Showing

Dimitrov has often flattered to deceive on court but the good thing about him has been his consistency in finding himself in the latter stages of some of the tournaments. As a result of that he is ranked 20th in the world at the moment and he would love to translate his recent form into something better during the US Open Swing.

It starts with his second round showing in Washington, in what will be his first match since having played at Wimbledon.

There he had made the fourth round with a win over Frances Tiafoe – who is the second seed here – and it took Holger Rune to end his run in that tournament.

Before that, Dimitrov had also come through the qualifiers to enter the quarterfinals of the Queen’s Club competition. In all he ended the grass swing with a 5-2 win-loss record.

As compared to that, he is 5-4 for the season on outdoor hardcourt surfaces and that’s something he would want to change as he takes to court for his second round match here. Can he make a winning start in the US?

McDonald Eases Past Schwartzman

Diego Schwartzman’s poor run in 2023 has been well-chronicled on our website multiple times and it was no surprise he had gone into his opening round match here against McDonald as a second favourite.

For McDonald to live up to those expectations, however, was a job well-done as he coasted to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over his Argentine opponent.

In a match that lasted a mere one hour and 18 minutes, McDonald faced – and saved – one break-point while managing to break Schwartzman’s serve three times. In fact, McDonald had break-points in five of the nine games that Schwartzman served in.

McDonald will have a tougher opponent next but he also enters the match on the back of a solid showing in hardcourt competitions. The American is 13-7 on win-loss on this surface this year which includes a semifinal appearance at the Acapulco Open and a third round entry in Miami.

Dimitrov v McDonald Prediction and Tip

This could turn out to be a top-notch encounter that goes to the third set. Dimitrov with the edge.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Dimitrov to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
