Yoshihito Nishioka v Emil Ruusuvouri Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, on three different surfaces, and Ruusuvouri has won every time.

In 2021, he won on indoor hard courts in Marseille, and, last year, on clay in Munich and on grass at Wimbledon.

Nishioka Wants to End Mini Slump

Nishioka reached the final in Washington last year before losing to Nick Kyrgios in straight sets, the only time he has got to that stage of an ATP 500 series tournament.

He did, though, win the Korea Open a few weeks later, the second major title of his career.

The Japanese number one has continued to make steady progress up the rankings this year, reaching the fourth round of both the Australian and French Opens.

However, he was beaten in the first round of Wimbledon, and, in his first match back since then, also lost his opening encounter in Atlanta last week, beaten by the Australian, Alexander Vukic, in three sets.

Given a first round bye in Washington courtesy of his seeding, he will want to put his mini-slump behind him.

Ruusvouri Ends Losing Streak

Ruusuvouri has been enduring his own drought when it comes to form recently, and, having reached the last four in Rosmalen, he then lost his next four matches.

That sequence encompassed first round defeats at Queen’s Club, Eastbourne and Wimbledon, and then back on clay in Bastad.

It was good for the Finn’s morale, as much as anything else, to put an end to that sequence, which he did with a first round victory over the Frenchman Constant Lestienne, the world number 109, in Washington.

An early break of serve was enough to earn Ruusuvouri the first set.

And the match was as good as won when Lestienne dropped his serve again at the start of the second set. The Finn dropped just five points on his own serve in the course of that second set.

Yoshihito v Ruusuvouri Prediction and Tip

Whilst Nishioka is the higher ranked and the seed, the history between these two men suggests that Ruusuvouri has the psychological edge over the Japanese player.

That will be playing on Nishioka’s mind, and Ruusuvouri will be looking to exploit it.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Ruusuvouri to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 22.5 games in the match: 17/20
