Paul 15-6 on Hardcourts This Season

Paul returns to hardcourt tennis after having done rather well in his first stint there which had come at the start of the season.

A finalist on the grass courts of Eastbourne, Paul had shown to the world what he is capable of earlier when he made the semifinal of the Australian Open. It had taken Novak Djokovic to end his stay in that competition.

He had followed that up with a finals appearance at the Acapulco Open but had gone down to Alex de Minaur.

All of these results have meant that Paul has now hit a career-high ranking of 14th in the world. And having never played in this tournament before this, Paul has a good chance to accumulate even more points and even knock on the doors of a top-10 spot.

Paul starts things off with a straightforward second round encounter.

Alves Surprises Tabilo

Not that either player are too highly-ranked but it was Alejandro Tabilo who had come into his opening round encounter against Alves as a 2/5 favourite.

An hour and 18 minutes later, however, it was Alves who not only came away a surprise winner but did that with utmost ease to seal his second round spot. It was also his maiden win on the ATP circuit.

More known for his performances on the clay courts of the Challenger circuit, Alves had played a mere seven matches in hardcourt competitions all season. In his eighth, he lost his serve four times but overtook Tabilo’s serve on a whopping seven occasions.

The opening set was a bit of a steamroll as Alves went 4-1 ahead before losing his serve. In the second too, he was up a couple of breaks and while he was broken once in response after that, there was no looking back as he served it out to clinch the match.

He will find Paul a different kettle of fish.
