Adrian Mannarino v Jordan Thompson Head to Head
This is a long-standing rivalry that goes all the way back to 2017. Both have played seven matches since then and Mannarino leads 5-2.
Four of those wins have come on grass, while the fifth happened in Dallas earlier this year.
They have also faced off three times this year already and Mannarino leads 2-1.

Veteran Mannarino Peeling Back the Years
While Mannarino did not have the greatest time on clay this season, he has done well enough on grass and hardcourt surfaces to help him climb up to 27th in the world.
To give you a context here, Mannarino is 35 years old and the last time he was in the top 30 of the rankings – and even touched his career-best ranking of 22nd – was in 2018. Five years on and at an age where players are winding down in their careers, Mannarino has found a second wind.
That can also be seen in his ATP title win in Newport, having earlier made the final of the Mallorca Open as well.
Speaking of his hardcourt performances, Mannarino had entered the fourth round of the Miami Masters in what was his best showing for the season on that surface. Can he kick-start things here with a win and go deep into the competition?

Thompson Needs Three Sets against Anderson
In an opening round match that lasted two hours and 13 minutes, Thompson came away a three-set winner over the returning Kevin Anderson.
Anderson who had retired from tennis but came back last month to put up a good show at Newport where he made the quarterfinal, started out a 6/4 underdog in their opener. However, he put up a good fight and managed to push Thompson to the third set before the Aussie sealed his spot in the second round.
Thompson won 6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-1 with his opponent fizzling out after having put up a strong showing in the second set which went the way of a tie-breaker.
In winning this match, Thompson had registered just his fourth main draw victory of the season in a hardcourt competition of the highest level. Now facing up to the challenge of a resurgent Mannarino, things could get that much more difficult.
