There was one previous meeting between these two players which came on the Challenger circuit. Eubanks had won that last year in a hardcourt competition.

Eubanks Returns after Atlanta Quarters

Eubanks has been tipped for great things and he has already shown those predictions aren’t too far off the mark. He has already won an ATP title this year and has broken into the top 30 of the rankings.

He enters this tournament ranked 29th in the world and with a quarterfinal appearance at the Atlanta Open last week under his belt.

The American would have liked to do a lot better but this is a good chance for him to cruise through to the later stages of this tournament, underlining his chances at the US Open. While he isn’t one of the top five favourites to win that title, a smooth run in these American swing could push him up to the dark horse status.

Here, he has a good chance to cruise through to the third round as he takes on a player who has never been ranked better than 158th in the world.

Shimabukuro Shocks Harris

Having lost to Bradley Klahn in the second qualifying round of this tournament, Shimabukuro wasn’t expected to do too much when he made the first round as a lucky loser.

Sure he was up against Lloyd Harris who has himself been on a comeback trail from his fitness issues but the South African had shown enough form in the lead-up to their match for him to start a 3/10 favourite.

How the match went was in sharp contrast to what those odds said.

Shimabukuro came away a 6-4, 6-3 winner, needing a mere 65 minutes to win his place in the second round, breaking his opponent three times in the encounter. He was himself broken once, which came off the only break-point he had faced.

Can he continue that run though, against a player who seems to be on the top of his game?

Eubanks v Shimabukuro Prediction and Tip

Eubanks shouldn’t have any issues here with a straight-set win looking a near-certainty.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Eubanks to win in straight sets: 5/6
