Murray Hoping to Inch Forward on the Rankings

Having had to make it back through his bouts of fitness concerns, Murray looks to be doing fairly well on the circuit and will enter this tournament with a first round bye.

Speaking of Murray’s season so far, he has had a high of 38th on the ATP Rankings charts while having also fallen to 70th at one stage.

The turnaround in his fortunes came on the hardcourts of Dubai where he made the final and climbed up 18 spots to 52nd. A title win on clay on the Challenger circuit helped him further but he opted out of the French Open.

Following that, another title victory followed at the Surbiton Challenger, and then a third in Nottingham meant he gave himself a chance to go deep at Wimbledon.

That did not happen as he ended up facing Stefanos Tsitsipas but his fighting five-set loss to the world number five points to how Murray is far from being done. A strong couple of performances in the USA could help him back back into the top-30 and by the looks of things Murray is quite capable of that.

Nakashima Scrapes Past Vukic

Aleksandar Vukic had come into this tournament having featured in the final of the Atlanta Open last week. Basically, he had form under his belt.

That said, as we had mentioned in our preview here, there was always that worry that he didn’t have much of a break between that tournament and the start here, making it difficult for him against Nakashima.

That’s exactly how it turned out with Nakashima making it through but it wasn’t easy for the American.

Nakashima won in straight sets, needing two hours and eight minutes to win but more vitally also two tie-breakers to do that. In the second set, he was forced to save two set-points in the tie-breaker, missed two match-points before finally clinching his spot in the second round.

It could get a lot tougher against Murray.

Murray v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

Murray might not start off a favourite but has our backing to win this given the difference in the overall form for the two players.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Murray to win: 1/1
