It wasn’t the most difficult set of opponents but Fritz would have needed that title win in Atlanta.

Sure he had to overcome JJ Wolf in the semifinal and was taken to three sets by Aleksandar Vukic in the final but Fritz will be relieved to make it another tournament victory.

That’s because it followed a rather underwhelming grass swing in which he won just three of the seven matches he had played.

His triumph in Atlanta was his second title for the season following his triumph at the Delray Beach Open, which was followed by quarterfinal appearances in Indian Wells and Miami. The bottom-line is Fritz’s record on hardcourt surfaces, especially those played at home, is sterling and overcoming him will need something special.

Svajda Edges Past Purcell

Svajda had entered this tournament having won just one career match at the highest level having also lost five in the process. And having never been ranked in the top 200 and without a wildcard to play here, Svajda had to come through the qualifiers to make the main draw here.

Interestingly, in the first round here against Max Purcell, he was the second favourite alright but at the same time it wasn’t too much of a difference with bookmakers offering 19/20 for his win.

A set down and 0-2 in the second, the writing seemed to be on the wall. A break of serve brought him back into the encounter as he levelled it out at 2-2 and while he needed a tie-breaker after that, Svajda managed to level things out.

In a topsy-turvy string of events, Svajda then broke early to go 2-0 up in the decider, only to lose his serve in the eighth game. He found himself with three match-points in the 10th game off his own serve, missed those and then broke his opponent for the third time in the set.

This time around he served it out to clinch a 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5 win in over two and a half hours.

That should give him a bit of a confidence coming into this match but he will also know Fritz won’t be allowing him so many chances.

Fritz v Svajda Prediction and Tip
