World no. 16 Madison Keys began her Washington Open campaign with a straight sets win over China’s Qinwen Zheng.
Playing for the first time since her quarterfinal finish at Wimbledon, the 28-year-old American came back from a break down to take the first set against the world no. 24. It was a closely contested set, which lasted 52 minutes.
With the first set was in the bag, Keys raised her game and dominated the proceedings in the second set. She broke Zheng twice to complete a 7-5, 6-1 victory.
Keys is into the round of 16 in Washington for the second time in her career. She will be looking to reach a fifth quarterfinal in 2023.
Keys improved to 26-9 this season. She won the title in Eastbourne to lift her seventh career title. She was also a quarterfinalist in Dubai, Charleston and Wimbledon.

Brady Makes a Winning Return
Playing for the first time since August 2021, Jennifer Brady made a winning return to the tour as the 2021 Australian Open finalist breezed past Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina in the first round.
Brady broke the Ukrainian thrice in the first and thrice in the second set, while she got broken just once in the first set to register a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Currently ranked no. 1056, the former no. 13 had been sidelined by knee and foot injuries for close to two years. She made a comeback at the Granby ITF last month, where she won one and lost one.
This is her first tour level event since being injured.
Brady is playing in the tournament for the third time and is in the round of 16 for the second time.
