Schmiedlova Starts Well
Slovak Republic’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova started her campaign in the Prague Open with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Patricia Maria Tig.
Despite being a near-flawless score on paper, it took Anna almost two hours to bag the victory. Her service game was on the poor end at 55%, but then, Patricia’s was far more abysmal at 36%.
Now ranked World No. 82, Schmiedlova’s record now stands at 18-17, with most of her season going by in early exits. Like many things, however, there are exceptions.
Her best result was reaching round four in the French Open and quarterfinal in WTA Budapest. Interestingly, she beat the Kudermetova sisters in the two tournaments.
The 28-year-old last reached a singles WTA final back in 2019.

Wang Bags a Rare Win
China’s Xiyu Wang, age 22, beat Denmark’s Clara Tauson 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 90 minutes. Her performance was a lot more clinical when compared to Schmiedlova’s opener.
That said, her season hasn’t been that good either. The win over Tauson was her 14th of the season against 16 losses.
Prague Open also marks her second tournament since May, where Wang bagged a first-round win. The other instance was in Eastbourne, where she made it as far as round two. Between the two events, she fell in round one in Wimbledon and Warsaw.
Xiyu’s best streak came in Madrid and Rome in the form of mid-stage appearances. She also beat a few prominent players like Bianca Andreescu and Irina-Camelia Begu.
Like Anna, Wang too has spent most of the 2023 tour battling early-round losses.
Wang v Schmiedlova Prediction and Tip
This match can swing either way. Wang is ranked just one place above Schmiedlova, and there is not a whole lot separating the two.
Of course, Anna will start as the favourite on account of her superior experience but that does not guarantee a win.
Tips:
- Moderate Risk Tip: Schimedlova to win: 4/7
