2019 champion Jessica Pegula will begin her campaign at this year’s Washington Open in the round of 16 on Thursday. The world no. 4 is the top seed in the tournament and so she received a first round bye.
Pegula will be playing for the first time since her quarterfinal defeat to Marketa Vondrousova at Wimbledon.
The American is 35-12 this season and 19-6 on hard courts. Some of her most notable performances this season included a runner-up finish at the Qatar Open and semifinal finishes in Dubai, Miami and Charleston. Additionally she was also a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open, Madrid Open, Eastbourne International and Wimbledon.
A win on Thursday will take the 29-year-old into the quarterfinal of a tournament for the ninth time this season.
Pegula is a two-time tour level champion from six finals and one of those titles came in Washington in 2019, when she beat Camila Giorgi in the final. In addition, she was also a semifinalist in the tournament in 2016. Can she reach the last eight stage on Thursday?

Lucky Loser Stearns Ousts Qualifier Frech
Lucky loser Peyton Stearns moved into the second round of the tournament with a straight sets win over Magdalena Frech on Tuesday.
The world no. 59, Stearns has been very good across levels this year and Tuesday’s win improved her to 36-13 this season. That includes a maiden final at the tour level in Bogota and four finals at the ITF level, which includes two triumphs and two runner-up finishes.
The 21-year-old was dominant in the first round match against Frech. She was not broken by the Polish player as she saved all nine of the break points she faced. In contrast, she held five break points and converted three of them to beat the qualifier 6-1, 6-4.
In the qualifiers, Stearns had beaten Iryna Shymanovich in straight sets, but had fallen to Hailey Baptiste in the second qualifying round. However she still found a place as a lucky loser. Can she pull off an upset win on Thursday?
