World no. 9 Maria Sakkari will be in action for the first time since her shock first round exit from Wimbledon.
The fourth seed Greek is 24-14 this season and has featured in five semifinals in Linz, Doha, Indian Wells, Madrid and Berlin. But despite reaching so many semifinals, she has not been able to reach a final.
Sakkari has won one title from seven finals over her career, of which she has five runner-up finishes on hard courts.
She will begin her Washington campaign in the second round on Thursday.

Fernandez Knocks Out Pera
For the fifth consecutive tournament, world no. 88 Leylah Fernandez won her opening round match. This time she defeated Bernarda Pera in straight sets on Tuesday.
The Canadian had made it to the main draw with straight sets qualifying round wins over Varvara Gracheva and Katie Boulter respectively. Carrying that form into the opening round, Fernandez defeated the world no. 53, 6-3, 7-5.
Fernandez saved 6 of 11 break points in the match and converted 7 of 9. The left-handed Canadian has not had a great run this season and has reached just one quarterfinal this year, which was in her season opener in Auckland. Since then Fernandez has struggled to win two main draw matches in a row this season.
