Humbert Edges Past Kokkinakis

Thanasi Kokkinakis is a tricky opponent for most and while Humbert had started off a favourite in their second round match, not too many expected the Aussie to go down without a fight.

And that is exactly how things transpired as Kokkinakis took Humbert to the third set before bowing out of the competition.

Humbert needed a whopping two hours and 46 minutes, saved two set-points in the opening set and was then forced to come back from being a break down in the decider to grab his place in round three.

He won 7-6 (6), 1-6, 6-4 in a match in which Humbert lost his serve three times while only overcoming Kokkinakis’ service on two occasions. The difference between these two players was the timing of those breaks – while Humbert managed those two in the deciding set when it was most needed, Kokkinakis got two in the second set and one early in the third.

The Frenchman will now have a golden chance of marching on to the last eight stage and in turn have a shot at breaking back into the top 30 on the ATP charts.

Watanuki in a Stunning Win over Auger-Aliassime

Felix Auger-Aliassime hasn’t been in the best of form but even then he was expected to come through in his second round match against Watanuki, a player who has never been ranked better than 99th in the world.

In a shocking result, Watanuki overcame his more illustrious opponent in two tie-breakers in a match that lasted nearly two and a half hours.

After neither player was able to get the better of the other’s serve in the first set, Watanuki earned himself his first set-point in the ensuing tie-breaker. He missed that, just like he missed the following three set-points but Auger-Aliassime kept giving and Watanuki soon obliged to wrap up the set.

The second set went the same way as the first with neither player earning a break but in the following tie-breaker the world number 99 did not face too many difficulties as he wrapped things up with ease.

Can he now dish out a similar result in his third round match?

Humbert v Watanuki Prediction and Tip

Humbert might start off a favourite here at 2/5 but he will be a tad wary of his resurgent opponent. We could see a Watanuki fight but Humbert in two is our best guess.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Humbert to win in straight sets: 6/5
