Fritz Makes it Five Wins in a Row
Having won the Atlanta Open title last week, Fritz registered his fifth successive win since his second round exit at Wimbledon when he eased past Zachary Svajda in the Washington opener.
Fritz won 6-3, 6-3 in his second round match following his first round bye, needing an hour and 13 minutes to make it through.
What was interesting to note is Fritz faced a whopping eight break-points in the encounter – six of which came in the second set – but saved every one of them. On the other hand he broke Svajda on three occasions from the three opportunities he had himself got.
The American will now be looking not just at his sixth win on the bounce but also hope to better his best ever performance at Washington which had come in 2022. Dan Evans had knocked him out in the third round last season.

Murray Overturns the Odds against Nakashima
It was surprising to see Brandon Nakashima start off a favourite against Murray despite the American’s underwhelming form all season. And not surprisingly, Murray made sure he was able to take advantage of that as he clinched a straight-set win in his second round encounter.
Starting out with a first round bye, Murray overcame Nakashima 7-6 (5), 6-4 in two hours and 12 minutes to come through and set up this meeting with Fritz.
The 15th-seed saved each of the six break-points he faced in the encounter but at the same time earned a mere two break-points of which he converted one. That came in the very first game of the second set following which Murray saved two break-points in the very next game.
Three more followed in the fourth before Murray saved another break-point while serving for the match in the second set.
Murray will now face another American but one whose form is in sharp contrast to his previous opponent’s.
