We had mentioned in our preview to the second round match between Coric and Jason Jung how the Croat has curiously been rather good on clay this season but struggled on hardcourt surfaces.
Which is why his thumping win over Jung in what was his first match on a hardcourt surface since Miami in March would have been a rather pleasing – and relieving – result for Coric. Even more so because till about 10 days back he was playing in the Hopman Cup on clay.
Coric coasted to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jung in a match that lasted 69 minutes.
He faced no break-points in the entire encounter, losing a mere 11 points on his own serve while breaking his opponent four times.
Clearly out of his depth, the lucky loser Jung folded quickly enough, allowing Coric an easy pathway to the next stage.

Ivashka Stretched Again
After getting taken to a third set by Beibit Zhukayev in his opener despite starting out a 1/4 favourite in that match, Ivashka went into his second round match against Borna Gojo as a 11/10 underdog.
And when he lost the first set in that match too, it looked like the writing was on the wall this time.
Except that for the second time in a row, Ivashka carved out a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win in more than two and a half hours of game time to reach the last eight. In a match that saw Ivashka lose his serve four times, it was Ivashka’s stickability that stood, with the Belarusian coming back from 2-4 down in the final set to win four games in a row.
As a result of that, this was the first time since his third round appearance at the Indian Wells Masters that Ivashka had won successive matches in hardcourt tennis.
Ivashka will now hope to make his third win in a row for the first time since his fourth round appearance at the 2022 US Open but he is up against a way higher-quality player here.
