World no. 7 Coco Gauff began her Washington campaign with a straight sets win over Hailey Baptiste in the second round on Wednesday.
The third seed American needed an hour and 18 minutes to beat her compatriot 6-1, 6-4.
Gauff, who won 79% first serve points in the match, saved all the three break points that she faced and converted 3 of 5 break points to beat the world no. 204, 6-1, 6-4. It was Gauff’s first match since her shock first round defeat at Wimbledon.
The 19-year-old will be aiming to reach a fourth semifinal of the season on Friday.
She had won her third career title from fourth final in the season opener in Auckland and had also finished as a semifinalist in Dubai and Eastbourne.

Bencic Cruises Past Davis
2018 quarterfinalist Belinda Bencic is back in the last eight stage in Washington following a straight sets win over Lauren Davis on Thursday.
The Swiss, world no. 15, broke Davis twice in the first set to take the opening set without much trouble. She then got the solitary break of the second set to win the one hour and 19 minute contest 6-1, 6-4.
The sixth seed had faced two break points in the match and she was equal to her task on both the occasions.
Bencic had advance to the second round after her first round opponent Anastasia Potapova had retired from the match while she trailed 5-6 in the opening set.
Bencic has enjoyed a solid run this season, that saw her reach three WTA finals. While sh won the titles in Adelaide-2 and Abu Dhabi, she finished runner-up in Charleston.

This is going to be tight one. Both have been brilliant on hard courts this year. Expect them to play out a three-setter with the third seed Gauff edging through.
