Samsonova, who is playing in her first tournament since her first round exit at Wimbledon, routed Cirstea 6-1, 6-3 to march forward. She had earlier defeated Danielle Collins by the same scoreline too, in her opener.
A finalist at the 2023 Abu Dhabi Open, Samsonova needed just an hour on court as she broke Cirstea thrice in the first set and then again in the fourth game of the second to go 3-1 up. From that point onward neither player earned any break-points but that suited Samsonova just fine as she cruised to her win.

Kostyuk Stuns Garcia
After having come back from being a set down to edge out Bianca Andreescu in the first round, Kostyuk faced her second challenging opponent of the tournament in a row in the form of the world number six Caroline Garcia.
And she was an even easy winner over Garcia, defeating the Frenchwoman 6-2, 6-3 to make it successive wins in a tournament twice in a row. She had made the third round at Wimbledon the last time Kostyuk had played.
Kostyuk was on court for a mere hour and five minutes, getting the better of Garcia’s serve on four occasions in the match. On the other hand, she faced just one break-point and saved it.
It’s been the kind of season in which Kostyuk has slowly and steadily built on her results and hit a career-high of 34th in the world. A win here will help her break into the top-30 for the first time in her career but up against her is an opponent who holds a 2-0 record against her.
