Auger-Aliassime Needs to Turn Things On

Auger-Aliassime looked to have turned a corner last year when he went on to win four titles at the highest level. This had followed a string of tournament final appearances with Auger-Aliassime having lost eight finals in a row.

Which is even more so why his performances this season have been shocking.

Other than the Australian Open and the Indian Wells Masters, Auger-Aliassime hasn’t won three successive matches this year. More importantly, in recently, he hasn’t won even two consecutive matches, having played in six tournaments in this period.

After getting knocked out of Wimbledon in the first round by Michael Mmoh, Auger-Aliassime then fell to a shock loss in Atlanta where Yosuke Watanuki overcame him in two tie-breakers.

A quarterfinalist here last season, Auger-Aliassime will now hope to use his home Masters 1000 competition as a springboard to turn things on again.

Purcell Hasn’t Won Since French Open

While Purcell overcame Peter Polansky and Brayden Schnur in the qualifiers to make the main draw here, he hasn’t won a single main draw match for a while.

In fact, since defeating Jordan Thompson in the first round of the French Open, Purcell had played six matches and lost them all. He had won a mere two sets in those six.

Which is also why losing just nine games spread over the four sets in the qualifiers should give him a tremendous boost in confidence coming into this tournament.

As would the fact that Purcell is 35-9 on win-loss in hardcourt competitions across all the circuits this season. This includes three Challenger titles on the same surface.

Can he put up a fight against the struggling Auger-Aliassime?

Auger-Aliassime v Purcell Prediction and Tip

Auger-Aliassime will start off a 1/3 favourite and despite all that has gone about in recent times, we have to peg him as the favourite here. Could be stretched though.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win: 1/3
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
