Marketa Vondrousova v Mayar Sherif Head to Head

Vondrousova and Sherif have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Vondrousova Returns from Wimbledon Triumph

She wasn’t much of a favourite to even make it to the second week at Wimbledon this year but Vondrousova didn’t just do that but also overcame the likes of Jessica Pegula, Elina Svitolina and Ons Jabeur on her way to winning the title.

In doing so, the former French Open finalist broke into the top 10 of the WTA Rankings and will now look to resume her winning ways.

What’s interesting to note is Vondrousova has had a decent run in hardcourt competitions this season too. Decent from the perspective of having entered the season ranked 92nd and hit a season-low of 105th at one point in 2023.

For her to then enter the semifinal of the Linz Open (indoors) and having made the fourth round at both, the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open, Vondrousova had done well.

She now has a chance to go even deeper in this WTA 1000 competition as she fine-tunes her performances for the US Open.

Sherif Returns to Least Favourite Surface

On the one hand is Sherif’s record this season which has seen her climb up the rankings ladder to her career-best of 31st in the world. On the other is her overall record in hardcourt competitions which isn’t quite the kind she would like going up against a player ranked in the top 10.

Sherif has featured in seven outdoor and one indoor hardcourt competition this year and has won just four matches to go with eight defeats. And in only one of those tournaments did she make it successive victories.

And it’s not just this season alone. Last year too, Sherif fell to 12 defeats from 13 matches played in such tournaments despite having a brilliant record overall.

She now faces up to the challenge of a Grand Slam winner and while Sherif herself has a deep run in a big competition in her, it might not yet happen in a hardcourt tournament like this one.
