Former world no. 3 Dominic Thiem showed nerves of steel as he saved five match points in an incredible come-from-behind win over Laslo Djere in the semifinals of the Kitzbuhel Open.

The Austrian saved three match points on his serve at 5-6 in the final set. Then he saved two more match points in the deciding set tiebreak before converting a second match point to clinch the dramatic semifinal 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) in three hours and 30 minutes.

In a gutsy performance, Thiem was not broken in the match as he saved all 12 of the break points that he faced in the match. In contrast, he held four break points and converted one of them.

This was Thiem’s third straight comeback win this week. He had beaten China’s Zhang Zhizhen 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round and Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinal on Thursday.

His only straight sets win saw him beat Facundo Bagnis in two tiebreaks in the first round.

Thiem, a 17-time tour level champion will be playing in a 29th final on Saturday. He hasn’t won a title since winning the U.S. Open in 2020 and it will be his first final since the ATP Finals final in 2020.

It will also be the Austrian’s third final in Kitzbuhel. He was a champion in 2019 and a runner-up in 2014. Can he cap off a fantastic week with a second title at home?

Baez Edges Past Etcheverry

World no. 72 Sebastian Baez reached his fifth career final and a second of the season as he battled past top seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the semifinal on Friday.

The 22-year-old argentine, who had won the Cordoba Open earlier this year, needed two hours and 44 minutes to see off his compatriot, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4.

This is the first time this week that Baez was stretched to three sets. He defeated Hamad Medjedovic 6-2, 6-4 in the first round and Roberto Carballés Baena 6-1, 6-2 in the second round, before beating Alex Molcan 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinal on Thursday.

Playing in his fifth career final on Saturday, Baez wil be loking to win his third title. He was a champion in Estoril last year and defeated Federico Coria for the Cordoba title this year.
