Top seed and 2019 champion Jessica Pegula reached the semifinal of the Washington Open for the third time in her career as she rallied from a set down to beat Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Svitolina got the solitary break of the first set, but Pegula hit back over the next two sets, getting a break early in both of the sets and protecting the lead till the end of both the sets to script a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.

The match saw the American save 6 of 7 break points and convert 2 of 5 to beat the world no. 27 for the second time in their three meetings.

Ranked no. 4th in the world, Pegula improved her season record to 37-12. She had beaten fellow American Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16.

Pegula will be looking to reach her seventh career final, and her second of the season, on Saturday. She was a finalist atthe Qatar Open this year, but could not add to her previous two titles, finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek.

This will be Pegula’s fifth semifinal of the season. Can she draw level with the Greek in their head-to-head rivalry?

Sakkari Tames Keys

Fourth seed Maria Sakkari made it to her sixth semifinal of the season with a straight sets win over seventh seed Madison Keys in the quarterfinal on Friday.

The Greek was not broken in the match as she saved both the break points that she faced. In contrast she held 10 break points in the match and she took three of those chances to win the one hour and 15 minutes contest 6-3, 6-3.

It was the second straight sets win in a row for the world no. 9, who had beaten Leylah Fernandez 7-5, 6-2 in the second round.

A one-time tour level champion from seven finals, Sakkari is still looking for her first final of the season. She lost all five of her previous semifinals this year.

It’s an evenly matched contest. However, Sakkari’s inability to go past the semifinals this year may put a bit of pressure on her. Expect a close three-set affair with the top seed Pegula edging through.
