Alexander Zverev v Tallon Griekspoor Head to Head

They are 1-1 from their previous meetings. Zverev won at Wimbledon in 2021, while Griekspoor won  at Rotterdam this year.

Zverev Was a Champion in 2017

Alexander Zverev is coming into the tournament as the champion of Hamburg. The German defeated Laslo Djere in the clay court final to lift his first title since the ATP finals triumph in 2021.

It was Zverev’s first final of the season after he suffered four semifinal losses in Dubai, Geneva, Halle and Roland Garros.

Overall Zverev is 33-18 this season, but most of his success has come on clay. Now he will have to make the transition back to hard courts, where he is 8-9 this season. His most significant hard court performances this year included a run to the final four in Dubai, and a round of 16 finish in Indian Wells.

He will be hoping to improve that hard court record at the backend of the season and will hope to start off well in Toronto.

A five-time Masters champion from 10 finals, Zverev will be playing at the Canadian Open for the fifth time. He was a champion in 2017 and reached the quarterfinals in 2018 and 2019, but has not played in the tournament since then. He has been handed a very tough opening round draw. Can the 13th seed make it to the second round?

Griekspoor on Debut

Facing Zverev will be the in-form Tallon Griekspoor, who will make his debut in Toronto.

As we were writing the preview, the Dutchman was preparing to play in the semifinal of the Citi Open in Washington. Griekspoor had beaten Liam Broady, Gael Monfils and JJ Wolf to set up a final four clash with top seed Taylor Fritz.

It has been a fantastic year for Griekspoor so far, as the world no. 37 improved to 26-13 at the tour level.

That record has also seen him reach his first two ATP finals this year and he succeeded in winning both of them in Pune and ‘s-Hertogenbosch respectively.

Can Griekspoor bring his Washington form to Toronto?

Zverev v Griekspoor Prediction and Tip

Zverev is a 20-time winner from 31 finals at the tour level. He also has loads of experience at the ATP 1000 level, and he will have to bring all his experience into play against the Dutchman, who brings good form into the tournament. But Griekspoor lacks the experience of playing at the Masters level and that makes Zverev a slight favourite. Expect the German to advance to round 2.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Zverev to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 5/6
