Mackenzie McDonald v Aslan Karatsev Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, both on hard courts within a few weeks of each other in 2022.

Karatsev won their match at the Australian Open in four sets, but McDonald was victorious in Dubai, winning in straight sets.

Washington Doubles Finalist McDonald

Although McDonald has yet to win a senior singles title, he is beginning to find some success in doubles. With the Brazilian Marcelo Melo, he won the Japan Open, and, by the time that he steps on court against Karatsev, he could be celebrating another.

He and partner Ben Shelton have reached the final in Washington.

The American endured a miserable clay court season, and failed to win a match between the end of March and mid-June.

Results did improve once he switched to grass, and he reached the semi-finals in Eastbourne, although he would have been disappointed to lose in the first round of Wimbledon to Alexander Bublik.

Since then there has been two second round appearances, first in Newport Beach, and then in the Washington singles.

Karatsev Struggling Since Madrid

For a year after January 2021 Karatsev enjoyed a career purple patch.

He reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, reached four ATP finals, winning four of them, and also picked up several doubles’ titles, as well as a silver in the mixed event at the Tokyo Olympics.

Maintaining that form has proved to be a challenge, although he did reach the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters this year.

Results since then can be summed-up as disappointing, and he has failed to get beyond the second round of any event he has entered.

That sequence was continued last week in Washington, where Frances Tiafoe defeated him at the second round stage.

He lost in the first round in Canada last year.

McDonald v Karatsev Prediction and Tip

With an identical head to head record, there is little to choose between these two players. However, recent form suggests that McDonald is in a better place than Karatsev, so he will be regarded as the favourite.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: McDonald to win: 7/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 24.5 games in the match: 5/4
