World no. 18 Lorenzo Musetti will bring a 26-18 season record into the tournament.

The Italian last played in the Hamburg Open, where he went down to eventual finalist Laslo Djere in the quarterfinal.

The 21-year-old has two semifinal appearances this year, but both came on clay in Barcelona and Bastad respectively. Additionally, he has six quarterfinal appearances this season. However, he has had very little success on hard courts and is 4-4 on the surface with all four wins coming at the United Cup, where he finished with a 4-1 in record.

Musetti has not won a match on hard court in the other tournaments, falling in his opening rounds at the Australian Open, Indian Wells and the Miami Open.

A two-time champion on the tour, Musetti will be playing in Toronto for the first time. Can the 16th seed impress on his debut?

Nishioka on a Four-Match Losing Streak

Yoshihito Nishioka is coming off back-to-back first round defeats in Atlanta and Washington.

The world no. 31 has however lost the last four matches in a row. In addition to the two hard court events, he also went down in the first round at Wimbledon, which had followed a round of 16 defeat at the French Open.

The left-handed Japanese player has an overall record of 13-13 at the tour level. He looked promising at the start of the season, but has been very inconsistent this year. Some of his notable performances this year included a semifinal finish in Adelaide and a run to the round of 16 at the Australian and the French Opens.

Apart from those results, he has had little success elsewhere.

Nishioka has a 1-3 record in Canada with his only win coming last year in the first round. Can he make a winning start this year?
