Liudmila Samsonova v Katerina Siniakova Head to Head

Siniakova leads Samsonova 1-0 in their head-to-head. The Czech defeated the Russian in the Bad Homburg quarterfinals en route to her fourth career title last month.

Samsonova’s Washington Defense Ends With Gauff Defeat

Liudmila Samsonova’s title defense at the Citi Open came to a juddering halt following the Russian’s 6-3, 6-3 defeat to American third seed Coco Gauff.

Samsonova served three aces to five double faults and was broken three times. By contrast, she couldn’t convert any of her five break points on Gauff’s serve.

The 24-year-old finally managed to steer her season in the right direction after a few below par performances and results since reaching the Abu Dhabi final earlier during the season.

While Samsonova is comfortably ranked in the world’s top 20, most of her rankings which accrued during the 2022 season were won in the second half of the year on hard courts.

Last year, she didn’t play the WTA 1000 doubleheader in Canada and Cincinnati, so there’s an opportunity to go big there.

But after that, things could get a little messy for Samsonova if she can’t reprise the results she garnered at the US Open and the Asian swing.

Siniakova Begins North American Swing

Katerina Siniakova fell to a shock straight sets defeat to Heather Watson in the Warsaw Open a few weeks ago in her first tournament back since reaching the Wimbledon second round.

In fact, both of her last two defeats (lost to Tsurenko at Wimbledon) came while being the odds-on favorite, which highlights Siniakova’s inconsistency.

The Czech was on a four-match losing streak when she won her fourth career title this season in Bad Homburg beating top-20 player Samsonova en route to the title, but she’s been rather quiet for the most part in singles competition.

Siniakova has enjoyed a more productive stay in doubles despite playing at a limited capacity this season. She won the Australian Open doubles crown alongside her long-time partner Barbora Krejcikova in January and then added the Indian Wells title in March.

Siniakova was also instrumental in possibly aiding Marketa Vondrousvoa’s grass court form in Berlin where they finished runners-up in doubles.

Samsonova v Siniakova Prediction and Tip

Siniakova has a bit of history to cling onto at this tournament where she pulled some scalps a couple of years ago beating Ostapenko and Muguruza. But the shackles are off for Samsonova, and she’ll likely back up her recent semifinal finish in Washington with a comfortable win here.
