Berrettini Searching for Consistency

World no. 40 Matteo Berrettini will be making just his second appearance at the Canadian Open. The Italian had fallen in the opening round to Pable Carreno Busta last year.

Berrettini has been off colour this season as a result of which he has seen a drop in the rankings from no. 14 at the start of the season to his current ranking of no. 40.

Part of the reason for that slide, is the injury he sustained in Monte-Carlo, which saw him miss out the entire clay season and also parts of the grass season. He made a return to Wimbledon and found some form, reaching the round of 16.

Berrettini is 10-8 at the tour level and 12-9 overall this season.

The Italian is a seven-time tour level champion from 12 finals, but played his only hard court final last year in Napoli, where he finished runner-up.

Barrere to Make His Toronto Debut

Gregoire Barrere is 18-17 at the tour level this season, while he is 27-21 including Challenger and qualifying rounds.

The 29-year-old Frenchman, who won the Quimper Challenger title for his sixth title at that level, has made just two quarterfinals at the top level this year. While he lost in the last eight stage in Montpellier, he finished as a semifinalist in Eastbourne.

Most recently he featured in the Washington Open, where he won his first round match, but lost in the round of 32 to Dan Evans.

This will be Barrere’s first appearance in the Canadian Open. In fact he had never played in a Master tournament before this season. Playing for the first time, he made it to the third round in the Miami Open and the second round of the Madrid Open this year. How far can he go in Toronto?

Berrettini v Barrere Prediction and Tip

Berrettini is the more experienced player and the Italian looked good on his Wimbledon return last month. Expect Barrere to put up some resistance, but Berrettini should still advance in straight sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Berrettini to win: 1/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
