Gracheva Coming off a Good Spell
Varvara Gracheva is currently ranked World No. 43 – just two places shy of her career-best ranking. With a record of 31-20, the 23-year-old has been hard at work – building form and momentum bit by bit.
The high notes of her season came in February & March when she reached her maiden WTA singles final. Competing first in Austin, she fell to Marta Kostyuk in the final but then followed it with consecutive fourth-round showings in Miami and Indian Wells – both as a qualifier.
In the two tournaments, Gracheva recorded some impressive wins over the likes of Petra Martic, Daria Kasatkina, Ons Jabeur, and Magdalena Frech.
Since then, Varvara also featured in the closing rounds of WTA Bad Homburg, Strasbourg International, and Paris Challenger.
Her last tournament was the Citi Open, where, as the number two seed, she fell in the opener to Leylah Fernandez.

Cirstea Enjoying a Good Season
Romania’s Sorana Cirstea is starting in Montreal with a win-loss tally of 24-16. This marks one of her best results since the closing of 2016 (34-21).
The World No. 32 has just one title from the season – Reus Challenger, where she beat Elizabeth Mandlik in the final. In addition, Cirstea made it to the final eight in Indian Wells and the semis in Miami.
The two WTA 1000 events saw her beat a few big names like Caroline Garcia, Madison Keys, Marketa Vondrousova, and Aryna Sabalenka.
Those results put the 33-year-old on the map and brought her closer to a top-30 re-entry.
Cirstea last played in Washington DC, where she fell to Liudmila Samsonova in round two in straight sets. Before that, she enjoyed a third-round showing at Wimbledon.
Sorana’s biggest career final came right here in the Canadian Open – 10 years ago. She was a runner-up then, losing the final to Serena Williams. Since then, she has not made it beyond round two in the competition.
