Pospisil Hasn’t Won a Match All Season

It’s been an utterly forgettable season for the 33-year-old Pospisil who has once ranked 25th in the world.

The Canadian, who received a wildcard to feature in this competition, hasn’t won a single main draw match at the highest level so far this year with four of his five wins having come on the Challenger circuit and another one in the qualifiers of an ATP tournament.

More recently things have gotten worse for Pospisil who lost in the first round of the Cherbourg Challenger, failed to make it past the opening qualifier at Wimbledon and then went down in the opener of the Granby Challenger as well.

What Pospisil needs is a bit of a turnaround in what is probably the twilight of his career and while he does the possess the game to get the better of a clay-courter like Arnaldi, things do look stiff for him given his own lack of rhythm.

Arnaldi Eases Through the Qualifiers

It was Arnaldi’s showing on clay this season that helped him break into the top 70 for the first time in his career. Having begun the season at 134th in the world, Arnaldi had just broken into the top 100 thanks to a Challenger title in Murcia.

He followed that up with a second round appearance at the Barcelona Open and another third round showing in Madrid – both times as a qualifier.

While a second round exit at the French Open would have been a bit of a surprise for the much-improved Arnaldi, he then went on to win another title on the Challenger circuit. It was the third of the season and fourth of his career.

A semifinal at Umag, again on clay, helped him touch a career-high of 65th.

Arnaldi now enters the Canadian Open with successive straight-set wins and while he’s not too well-known on hardcourt surfaces, his confidence coupled with his opponent’s lack of it could go a long way in helping him start a favourite.

Pospisil v Arnaldi Prediction and Tip

  • Low Risk Tip: Arnaldi to win: 2/5
