On a good day, Fabio Fognini is undoubtedly one of the few players who could take an opponents racquet out of their of hands especially on a clay court. However, those days had been few and far between in 2019 having lost 8 out of his last 9 matches prior to Monte Carlo.
The Italian secured a comeback from the dead in his opening match against Andrey Rublev and he has looked unstoppable since. He stunned 11-time Monte Carlo champion Rafael Nadal in the semifinals with a sensational display of power and precision tennis. Fognini was in this territory before when he reached the last four in the Principality before going down in straight sets to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in 2013.
This time though, not only did the mercurial 31-year-old go one better, but he did so at the expense of the greatest clay court player in history. Fognini was expected to be a thorn in Nadal’s game but not to a point where it felt more of an execution rather than a contest.
The Italian will need to squeeze out another big performance on Sunday against a surprise finalist, but will his elbow hold up?

There were some people who looked at the draw of the 2019 Monte Carlo Masters a week ago, and imagined that there was a reasonable chance that a Serbian would appear on final Sunday. But surely none of them had Dusan Lajovic in front of the queue ahead of World No.1 Novak Djokovic. The 28-year-old – who like Djokovic- hails from Belgrade, will make his debut in the final of a Masters 1000 event.
In fairness, Lajovic has exceeded expectations with a series of brilliant wins against established clay courts specialists such as David Goffin and Dominic Thiem. He overcame a nervous start against Daniil Medvedev in the semis before producing a near-impeccable display in which he won 12 of the last 13 games to beat the Russian.
The Serb World No.48 has never won an ATP Singles title before, and that could be added motivation for a man who will crack the Top 25 for the first time when the new rankings are released on Monday.
These two players have never met before. It will be a first competitive meeting on the ATP tour and both players are appearing in a final of Masters 1000 event for the first time.
Fognini v Lajovic Tips and Predictions
This is such a tough one to call solely due to Fognini’s unpredictability. If the Italian brings his A-game to the table, I doubt Lajovic will be able to live with him. However, Fognini can be erratic and brilliant at the same time, and his stunning win over Nadal should not mask the frailties and the recent terrible run of form.
The World No.18 even received backing from his wife, former US Open champion Flavia Pennetta who cited that her husband was mentally unprepared during the South American clay-court swing in February.
Dusan Lajovic has nothing to lose quite honestly. He is yet to drop a set this week and he has certainly played better tennis which is evident from the ease in which he has progressed each round. His confidence is sky high and he will be buoyed by this opportunity. I am going for an upset win with Lajovic winning his first career ATP title.
