Men’s 2018 US Open Draw:
Current French Open champion Rafael Nadal will enter the competition as the defending champion after winning the previous US Open. Roger Federer has been seeded second as was expected and the two stalwarts, as a result of that, will meet each other only in the final of the tournament. Wimbledon and Cincinnati Masters winner Novak Djokovic is seeded sixth, while Juan Martin del Potro, a former winner himself, has climbed up to the third seeding.
Nadal will begin his campaign against fellow Spaniard and former world number three, David Ferrer. He faces the winner of the match between Vasek Pospisil and Lukas Lacko in the second if he wins his opener and has a potential third round opponent in the form of Karen Khachanov in the third. Kyle Edmund or Jack Sock could be his fourth round opponents while Kevin Anderson is a possible quarter-finalist.
Life would be way tougher for Federer though. He starts off against Yoshihito Nishioka but could face Nick Kyrgios as early as in the third round and Djokovic in the quarter-finals. Djokovic has the likes of Richard Gaquet, Lucas Pouille and Pablo Carreno Busta, to overcome before he get to that dream quarter-final against the Swiss maestro.
Third seeded del Potro starts off against a qualifier, but could face Andy Murray in the third round while Grigor Dimitrov, in a stunning coincidence, will be up against Stan Wawrinka in his first round match after having done that at Wimbledon too. Del Potro and Dimitrov could meet in the quarter-finals if they both win their first four rounds.
Zverev, who is the fourth seed, plays a qualifier in his opener but could face one of Diego Schwartzman or Kei Nishikori as early as in the fourth round which could make it tougher for him after having floundered so much in Grand Slams. Awaiting him in the quarter-finals could be Marin Cilic, who has the likes of Adrian Mannarino and David Goffin facing him on that route.

Women’s 2018 US Open Draw:
In an all-American final, Sloane Stephens won her first Grand Slam title by beating Madison Keys in straights set, 6-3, 6-0, in the final to take home the 2017 US Open title. However, she will be the third seed in the competition behind French Open winner Simona Halep who is number one and Australian Open winner who is the second seed. Serena Williams has been seeded 17th in this year’s tournament.
Top seeded Halep is already struggling with a few injuries and adding to her woes is the possibility she might have to face Serena Williams as early as in the fourth round of the competition. Serena herself could face her sister Venus Williams in the third round if the latter can get the better of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Camila Giorgi on her way.
Wozniacki is the second seed and has an interesting first round match against former champion Samantha Stosur. Kiki Bertens could be on her path to making it to the last-eight where she might face Petra Kvitova. Kvitova will have to overcome latest women’s sensation Aryna Sabalenka, and possibly Daria Kasaktina on her way to the quarters.
Defending champion, Stephens, also the third seed, should have an easy pathway to the third round with a qualifier assured of facing her in round two if she wins her opener. However, Victoria Azarenka or Daria Gavrilova could be in line to face her there, while Elise Mertens or Barbora Strycova will be her potential opponents in round four. Julia Goerges and Elina Svitolina might face off in round four with the winner taking on Stephens in the quarter-finals if they make it there.
Fourth seeded Angelique Kerber could be up against Alize Cornet as early as in round two and last year’s runner-up Madison Keys in the fourth round before her potential quarter-final against Caroline Garcia. For Garcia to make it through to the quarters though, she will need to beat one of Maria Sharapova or Jelena Ostapenko in her fourth round match.
Here’re the women’s seeds for the 2018 US Open:
1. Simona Halep, Romania
2. Caroline Wozniacki, Denmark
3. Sloane Stephens, United States
4. Angelique Kerber, Germany
5. Petra Kvitova, Czech Republic
6. Caroline Garcia, France
7. Elina Svitolina, Ukraine
8. Karolina Pliskova, Czech Republic
9. Julia Goerges, Germany
10. Jelena Ostapenko, Latvia
11. Daria Kasatkina, Russia

28. Anett Kontaveit, Estonia
29. Dominika Cibulkova, Slovakia
30. Carla Suarez Navarro, Spain
31. Magdalena Rybarikova, Slovakia
32. Maria Sakkari, Greece
What will be interesting to watch is whether Andy Murray takes to court and if so, if he’s given a wild-card to participate in the competition. The issue with Stan Wawrinka won’t be too different given his dramatic fall in the rankings because of his injury issues. If that’s indeed the case, the duo could cause bit of a ruffle in the men’s US Open draw.
Some of the top players who can be expected to take part in the men’s section of the draw are Nadal, Federer, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem, Juan Martin del Potro, Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic.
On the women’s side, the presence of Serena Williams will make for interesting viewing. She has risen back up to 28th in the world and by the time the US Open begins, might gain a few more rankings. Her seeding outside the top eight will mean she could face one of the top eight seeds in the fourth round and if she doesn’t get a seeding in the top 16, she could end up facing a top eight seed player in round three as well.
The women’s side of the draw will have Garbine Muguruza, Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, Ostapenko and Petra Kvitova.
More information on the US Open draw will be revealed as we get closer to the tournament and more information on player injuries is revealed.
