What Happened at the 2019 ATP Vienna Open?
Dominic Thiem is the defending champion having won the 2019 title by defeating his close friend Diego Schwartzman in a tough, three-set final.
The Austrian had a tough run throughout the competition as he needed three sets to overcome Fernando Verdasco in the second round, and another three-setter in the semifinal against Matteo Berrettini before making it to the final. Schwartzman had sent the second seeded Karen Khachanov out in the quarterfinal.
Earlier, in 2018, Kevin Anderson clinched the the biggest title of his career by defeating Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-3, 7-6(3) in straight sets at the Erste Bank Open 500.
Anderson was the second seed at the tournament and was one of the favorites to win the tournament and he did not disappoint. He was appearing in his fifth tour-level final of the season, Anderson captured his second trophy of the year.
Kei Nishikori mad his way into the finals by defeating the top seed Dominic Thiem in the quarter finals in straight sets. He then went on to thrash the qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin in the straight sets to put himself in the finals against Kevin Anderson.
Anderson shrugged off challenges from the sixth seed Borna Coric in the quarter finals and then the unseeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the semi finals to reach his fifth finals of the season.
