Founded in 1973, the World TeamTennis competition uses a completely different format to typical tennis tournaments around the world. While it is a team tennis tournament, it needs players to play just one set each and a total of five matches constitute the five sets.

Each set is played to five games with a difference of two. A tie-breaker to nine points occurs at 4-4.

There is a no-advantage rule; i.e. the player winning the point at deuce wins the game.
