We are in early days of trying to understand the what and how of this newly-formed tournament, the Abu Dhabi Open which was first played in 2021 as the tennis organisers around the world looked to bring in newer venues. The competition wasn’t held in 2022 before returning this year.
This tournament in Abu Dhabi is expected to fall in the WTA 500, in what is the newly-formed category of the points system on the women’s tour.
The Abu Dhabi Open will be hosted Zayed Sports City International Tennis Centre in Abu Dhabi in 2023 and will see some of the top players on the women’s tour take part in this competition.
2023 WTA Abu Dhabi Schedule and Dates
The WTA Abu Dhabi will kick-start from Monday, February 6 with its first round matches and the tournament will go all the way through to Sunday, February 12 when the final will be held.
The qualifiers are expected to be played in the weekend before the opening round matches begin.

What Happened in the 2022 WTA Abu Dhabi?
WTA Abu Dhabi wasn’t played in 2022.
The tournament was first held in 2021 where Aryna Sabalenka defeated Veronika Kudermetova in the final to lift the title. She won 6-2, 6-2.
Sabalenka, seeded fourth in the draw, overcame Ons Jabeur in the third round, then defeated Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinal before clinching her spot in the final with a straight-set win over Maria Sakkari.
Top seeded Sofia Kenin made the quarterfinal where she was sent out by Sakkari while second seeded Elina Svitolina lost to Kudermetova in the last eight stage.
