As has been repeated in news reports, it will be the return of this sport to that city, with the Albany Open following the OTB Open which was last played in 1994. It was played for a period of 10 years between 1985 and 1994, with players from both, ATP and WTA participating in the competition. This tournament will be a 32-player singles event (along with 16 doubles teams) and fall under the banner of WTA International competitions. The Albany Open will be played on outdoor hard courts and have a minimum prize money of $275,000.

The 2020 Albany Open women’s draw was expected to precede the US Open which meant it was to be played from Sunday to Saturday, i.e. August 23 to August 29. The qualifiers, which were to have 24 singles players were to held in the lead-up to the first round matches on August 23.

What Happened at the 2020 WTA Albany?
The 2020 edition of the tournament, which was expected to be its first, was cancelled because of the pandemic.
This is obviously the first ever edition of the Albany Open but looking back at the OTB Open back in the 80s and 90s, no player won this event more than once in the women’s draw. Some of the noted winners since 1990 included Anke Hubert, Brenda Schultz and Barbara Rittner.
