What Happened at the 2019 WTA Bogota?
Amanda Anisimova won the previous edition of the Bogota Open as she defeated Australia’s Astra Sharma in the final. Anisimova overturned a first set deficit to clinch the match in three sets, winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Anisimova, who had started the tournament off as the sixth seed, did not face a single seeded player in her entire run to the title victory. Interestingly, she was stretched to three sets in all but one of her matches during the tournament.
Top seeded Jelena Ostapenko was ousted in the first round of the tournament, while defending champion Anna Karolina Schmiedlova went out in the second, along with Magda Linette.
The 2018 edition of the tournament was an exciting one for the fans. It was won by the Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who defeated the Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena in the final.
Interestingly, it was the second consecutive time that the Spaniard had made it to the final in Bogota and failed to go the distance. In 2017, she was defeated by Schiavone in straight sets. Along with the likes of Schmiedlova and Arruabarrena, the event also featured Tatjana Maria, Johanna Larsson, Magda Linette, and Veronica Cepede Royg as the top seeds.
However, among the top eight seeds, only two made it to the semifinal – Ana Bogdan and Arruabarrena. The two players respectively faced Schmiedlova and Dalila Jakupovic in that round. Other players who left an impression in the tournament in 2018 were Dalila Jakupovic, Colombian wildcard Emiliana Arango, and the Chilean qualifier Daniela Seguel.
