The main draw of the 2020 WTA Bucharest was expected to kick-start from the Monday after Wimbledon got over, i.e., on July 13. The tournament was to go on till July 19, Sunday when the was to be played with the qualifying rounds to obviously be played over the preceding weekend.

While the 2020 edition was cancelled because of the pandemic, in 2019, leading the draw was the defending champion Anastasija Sevastova, who was joined by several upcoming talents on the women’s circuit. What Happened at the 2020 WTA Bucharest?
The WTA Bucharest was not held in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
It was an easy win for the unseeded Elena Rybakina in the final of the 2019 edition when she defeated the qualifier Patricia Maria Tig 6-2, 6-0 to lift the title. This was after the defending champion Anastasija Sevastova was dumped out by Tig in round two of the competition.
Laura Siegemund and Martina di Giuseppe were the losing semifinalists.
The 29-year-old Sevastova started the 2018 tournament as the top seed and ended up winning it by defeating Petra Martic in the final. It was her third singles title on the tour – her first since the previous year’s Mallorca Open.
Sevastova started on a shaky note with a three-set win over Dalila Jakupovic but then, she found her groove and reached the semifinal after defeating Arantxa Rus, Sorana Cirstea, and Polona Hercog.
As for Martic, she had to navigate a fairly tricky draw. Starting with Rebecca Sramkova, she moved past Claire Liu, Siegemund, and ultimately, the number two seed Mihaela Buzarnescu. It was among the better performances by Martic, who reached her first final on the WTA Tour since 2012.
Sevastova and Martic, two of the top four seeds, collided in the final and the Latvian emerged as the winner with 7-6(4), 6-2.
