This is the second that the Chennai Open will be played on the women’s circuit but India has hosted WTA tournaments before this. In the period between 2003 and 2008, there was an Indian Open competition that was held in Hyderabad and Bangalore.

It had started off as a Tier IV event, before becoming a Tier III competition and then even a Tier II tournament in 2008 when Serena Williams had taken part and won the title.

Following that, the Indian Open wasn’t held between 2009 and 2021 before returning in its current avatar in 2022, the Chennai Open which will be played on outdoor hard court surface as a part of the WTA 250 series.

What Happened at the 2022 Chennai Open?

The 2022 edition was its first ever at the Chennai Open after being held as the Indian Open between 2003 and 2008 with Serena Williams winning the title the last time it was played. In 2022, it was the unseeded Linda Fruhvirtova who won the tournament by beating Magda Linette in three sets.

Fruhvirtova had earlier needed three sets against Nadia Podoroska in the semifinals too, while Linette benefitted from the withdrawal of Katie Swan in the other semifinal.

This was after the top seeded Alison Riske was bundled out of the competition in the very first round, losing to Anastasia Gasanova.
