The WTA Dubai is known to be one of the best women’s tournaments on the WTA circuit and that’s because of the sheer class of talent that’s on display during the week. Incidentally, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is categorized alternately as a Premier and a Premier 5 event each year.
In 2020, it was a WTA Premier competition and a WTA Premier 5 tournament, which was changed to WTA 1000 in 2021. In 2022 it was classified as a WTA 500 competition and will be played as a WTA 1000 event in 2023 as a result.
This is typically the first big tournament on the women’s circuit after the Australian Open and will be attended by some of the best players on the circuit

What Happened in the 2022 WTA Dubai?
In what turned out to be a surprise result, it was Latvia’s Jeļena Ostapenko who won the title in the 2022 WTA Dubai as she routed Veronika Kudermetova in the final, 6–0, 6–4.
Earlier in the tournament, she was down a match-point against Petra Kvitová but saved it and moved past the Czech player to make the semifinal.
What was interesting to see was none of the top six seeded players got past the second round, including the top seeded Aryna Sabalenka and sixth seeded Iga Swiatek falling in the second round.
The 2021 edition of the Dubai Tennis Championships was won by Garbine Muguruza when she edged past Barbora Krejcikova in the final. She clinched it 7-6 (6), 6-3 to lift the title.
Muguruza had earlier gotten past Elise Mertens while Krejcikova ousted Jil Teichmann in their respective semifinals to enter the title-decider.
Top seeded Simona Halep won the 2020 edition of the WTA Dubai by defeating Elena Rybakina in the final in a tough three-setter. Earlier, Halep had overcome Ons Jabeur, Aryna Sabalenka and Jennifer Brady in her previous rounds following a first round bye.
Rybakina starts off her campaign with a first round win over the Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin and then proceeded to defeat Katerina Siniakova, second seeded Karolina Pliskova and Petra Martic to enter the final.
Also participating in the tournament was the comeback queen Kim Clijsters who lost her first round match to Garbine Muguruza but not before she had threatened to take it to the third set.
Two-time defending champion Elina Svitolina went out to Belinda Bencic in the semifinals, who went on to defeat Petra Kvitova in the final to win the title. Bencic faced six match-points against Aryna Sabalenka in an earlier match but came back strongly to beat her and then overcame Kvitova 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 to clinch her second tournament win at the Premier-5 level.
After an easy couple of wins in the first two rounds, Bencic needed a third set tie-breaker and 9-7 in that tie-breaker to beat Sabalenka, before bouncing out Simona Halep in three sets as well. This was followed by the victories over Svitolina and second seeded Kvitova.
Third seeded Halep and fourth seeded Karolina Pliskova made it as far as the quarterfinal while the top seed Naomi Osaka was sent packing in the second round itself, having entered the competition on the back of the Australian Open title.
The 2018 edition was won by the World No. 7 Elina Svitolina, who successfully defended her title in Dubai after defeating Daria Kasatkina in the final in straight sets.
She started the competition as the defending champion and under pressure, she performed superbly. On her way to the final, she defeated many big players like Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber.
On the other hand, Kasatkina too was highly impressive. She had to fight her way through the likes of Agnieszka Radwanska, Johanna Konta, Elena Vesnina, and Garbine Muguruza. The competition was highly entertaining, given that the two top seeds – Svitolina and Muguruza, made it to the semifinal.
