What Happened at the 2022 Guangzhou Open?

The 2020, 2021 and 2022 editions of the Guangzhou Open were cancelled after the coronavirus pandemic swept over the world and there were allegations of sexual abuse against Chinese player Peng Shuai.

The 2019 tournament was won by Sofia Kenin of USA, the third seed, who beat Aussie wildcard Samantha Stosur in the final in three sets.

Defending champion Wang Qiang, who was also the second seed in the competition fell in the first round while top seeded Svitolina had to retire from her second round match against Marie Bouzkova after being a set down.

In 2018, the event was won by Wang Qiang, who defeated Yulia Putintseva in the final with 6-1, 6-2. That was Wang’s second title of the season and later, she reached the final in the Hong Kong Open and WTA Elite Trophy.

On her way to the title, she moved past the likes of Svetlana Kuznetsova, Andrea Petkovic, and Fiona Ferro.

As for Putintseva, she had a decent run herself as she moved past Sabine Lisicki, Bernarda Pera, and Kateryna Kozlova. Among the top seeds, Alize Cornet fell in the first round itself while Victoria Kuzmova and Zheng Saisai fell in the second.
