It is a part of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour and is categorized as an International tournament. It is the final event in the buildup to the Australian Open and the victor here is awarded a total of 280 points.

Over the years, many prominent female athletes have participated in the WTA Hobart like Serena Williams, Jelena Jankovic and Victoria Azarenka.

Since it is played in the week before the first Grand Slam of the season, many big players choose to opt out of this tournament and give their body the much-needed rest. This leaves the field wide open for the young and emerging players, who are not just looking to make an impression on the tour but also tuning up to the Australian Open.
