So far, only four editions of the tournament have taken place – one in 2015 and the other in 2017 – before it resumed in 2019 yet again.

On the first two instances, the event was conducted as a part of the WTA 125K Series circuit before joining the main WTA tournament ranks. Prior to this, however, the picturesque town of Hua Hin hosted several exhibition matches which featured many tennis superstars like Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki, and Kim Clijsters.

Considering that Thailand hadn’t hosted a professional tennis tournament in quite a long time before 2019, the 2020 WTA Hua Hin is bound to be a remarkable affair for the tennis enthusiasts in the country. The event will now be played as an International event on the WTA circuit, with a prize pool of $250,000 and a total of 280 ranking points up for grabs.

What Happened at the 2020 WTA Thailand Open?

Magda Linette proved to be the surprise winner of the Thailand Open in 2020 as she defeated the Swiss qualifier Leonie Kung in the final in straight sets. Kung had earlier overcome Nao Hibino in the semifinal, a player who gotten past Elina Svitolina in the previous round.

Rather interestingly, Linette faced no seeded player right throughout the tournament to win her second WTA title.

Eighth seeded Dayan Yastremska won the 2019 Hua Hin title by beating the sixth seeded Ajla Tomljanovic in the final that went the distance. After losing the first set, Tomljanovic mounted a brilliant fightback but Yastremska finally prevailed in a grilling final set that went into a tie-breaker.

Earlier both had registered easy wins in the semi-finals with Yastremska defeating Magda Linette and Tomljanovic overcoming Tamara Zidansek. Top seeded Muguruza was sent packing in the quarterfinal by the title winner while the second seeded Caroline Garcia lost in round one to Jennifer Brady.

In 2017, the tournament was won by the Swiss No. 1 Belinda Bencic, who defeated the fourth seed Hsieh Su-Wei in the final. The Swiss enjoyed a great run in the tournament, started with a straight set win over the Mexican qualifier Giuliana Olmos. She then moved on to defeat the likes of Vitalia Diatchenko, and eventually, Ana Bogdan in the semis.

Other players like Evgeniya Rodina, Naomi Broady, Viktorija Golubic, and the local favorite Luksika Kumkhum also participated in the event. Among these, Golubic was the only one who could make it to the final four, where she was defeated by Hsieh.
