What Happened at the 2018 WTA Hungarian Ladies Open?
The defending champion was the local favorite Timea Babos. However, this time around, the best she could do was make it as far as the second round before succumbing to the German Mona Barthel. The early rounds also witnessed the exit of other top seeds such as Vekic, Aleksandra Krunic, and Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
The tournament was ultimately won by the Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck, who on her way to the final, defeated Mihaela Buzarnescu and Shuai Zhang. In the final, she met the top seed Dominika Cibulkova, who up until that point had not dropped even a single set in Budapest.
Against the Belgian, however, she did face some difficulties. Despite being considerably experienced and starting as the favorite, the Slovakian eventually succumbed to Uytvanck 3-6, 6-3, 5-7.
