What Happened at the 2022 Korea Open?

The 2022 edition of the Korea Open was won by Ekaterina Alexandrova. Alexandrova had gone into the tournament as the second seed and defeated the top seeded Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (4), 6-0 to lift the trophy.

Earlier, Alexandrova had overcame Tatjana Maria and Ostapenko benefitted from the third set retirement of Emma Raducanu in their respective semifinals to set up the title-decider.

WTA Korea was played as a WTA 125 event in 2021, and Zhu Lin won the title with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Kristina Mladenovic in the final.

The 2020 edition of the WTA Korea Open was cancelled because of the pandemic.

In 2019, the final saw the third and fourth seeds Karolina Muchova and Magda Linette fight for top honours and it was the Czech player Muchova who came away on top. She  won the final 6-1, 6-1 to lift her first ever trophy on the WTA circuit following a defeat at the Prague Open earlier in the year.

This was after they had gotten the better of the eighth seeded Wang Yafan and second seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova in the semifinals before that. Both those matches ended in straight sets but weren’t as straightforward as that with both losing semifinalists having a good number of chances. Top seeded Maria Sakkari withdrew from the tournament before round one.

In 2018, this tennis tournament in Seoul was won by Kiki Bertens, who defeated Tomljanovic in the final in three sets. It was among her better tournaments of the year, where she moved past some strong opponents like Maria Sakkri, Evgeniya Rodina, and Dalila Jakupovic.

As for Tomljanovic, she had a superb run in the competition – one of the key highlights of her entire tennis career, where she defeated Su-Wei Hsieh, Mandy Minella, and Alison Van Uytvanck. Apart from them, Jelena Ostapenko also featured in the tournament as the top seed but lost in the second round to Alexandrova of Russia.
