What happened in the 2020 WTA Kremlin Cup?
The 2020 WTA Kremlin did not take place because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Belinda Bencic was the winner of the 2019 title, when she defeated Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 3–6, 6–1, 6–1 in the title-decider.
This was after the top seeded Elina Svitolina got a first round bye and was knocked out in the second round by Veronika Kudermetova and the fourth seed Donna Vekic met with a similar fate at the same stage against Karolina Muchova.
The top seed in the tournament in 2018 was Simona Halep who withdrew from the tournament quite early. The next three seeds were knocked out of the tournament by the quarter finals and quite surprisingly the unseeded Brit Johanna Konta, the qualifier from Tunisia Ons Jabeur, the fifith seed Anastasija Sevatsova and the sixth seed Daria Kasatkina made it through to the last four.
Daria Kasatkina dominated her semi final tie against Johanna Konta and made it to the finals by defeating the British number one in straight sets. Whilst, the Tunisian qualifier Ons Jabeur emerged victorious from her match against the fifth seed of the tournament against the Latvian Anastasija Sevatsova and stepped into the final against the Russian Daria Kasatkina and became the first player from her country to make it to a WTA final.
The local star, Daria Kasatkina took the title by defeating the surprise finalist, Ons Jabeur in a roller coaster match that ended 2–6, 7–6, 6–4. With this title, the Russian broke into the top 10 rankings for the first time in her career.
